5 Questions with Mostly Trees releasing Moon Dogs on June 1 at the Icehouse

Mostly Trees is releasing a new album, Moon Dogs, with a release at the Icehouse on June 1, 2023. It’s a laid back sound that is perfect for summer!

Last time we chatted was 2019! Were you guys able to play together and create music during the pandemic? Electric Sheep certainly sounds like a glimpse of life in Minnesota after May 2020.

We had just released our self-titled album in December of 2019 and were starting to ramp up shows and promotion for it right around the time the world turned upside down. We did a lot of hanging out via Zoom, and just kinda waited it out for a bit. Once we were able to start hanging out again in person we had a lot of tib bits and melodies to pass back and forth. We also went up north a few times and had recording sessions in cabins we rented.

Would you say Moon Dogs feels even dreamier than your debut album Mostly Trees? Or is it that I haven’t heard Moon Dogs live yet?

Moon Dogs is very much a laid back and groove record than the last record. We recorded with Daniel Tashian(producer) and Craig Alvin (engineer) in Nashville and got some very heavy vibes from the city and studio. We kind of feel like it came out as a driving record.

I thought I was making up a connection between your sound and Stone Roses until I heard Sandstone. What are your influences? Has their impact changed since the last album?

We got a lot of influence from Daniel, who is not only a great musician and producer, but a great guy too. We leaned on him alot in the studio to take us out of our comfort zones and influence the direction of the songs a bit. He also played several instruments on the record. We definitely were eager to try new things and build off our sound from the last record.

If You Knew is a gorgeous song but hits me in a sad way. Can you tell us more about it?

It’s actually a song I originally wrote and recorded when I was in high school and we always kept it close to us. We decided to bring it to the sessions and reinvent the vibe of it without losing the raw emotion of the song. The song is about wanting to tell someone how you feel but being afraid you will regret it or won’t like their reaction. Very simple love song I guess.

Tell us the album release and release show.

The album will be released on June 1st and the release show is the same night at Icehouse in Minneapolis. We are really excited to be sharing the stage with Good Doom. Doors are at 8pm and Music starts at 9pm!
