Samuel Wilbur puts life lessons into song in a way that’s clever, compassionate, and best of all catchy. It’s not didactic because he sings from the voice of an equal, not a superior. I left the show feeling like a member of community that made me want to do better.
I had the opportunity to ask Sam 5 Questions right after Christmas so, in full disclosure, I knew he was a teacher when I headed out to his album release (The Age) last night but last night I learned, he’s like your favorite teacher because he brings up contemporary issues. Like the Karens. I love the video for that song; hearing it live was just as good. It has a poppy, fun feel. While War Crimes is in your face with a beat that’s reminiscent of marching. It’s that smart use of sound as well as lyrics that make the music rich.
Sam had a full stage of excellent performers, including a rotation of amazing women singers. They were all great and Sam’s basement bass voice paired well with each but differently – like serving different foods with the same wine to highlight new dimensions. Also bringing up new folks brought an energy to every song.
Sam played with two other bands. Kiernan was a band that was entirely new to me. They sang about Colorado and Alaska but with a Minnesota eye. The drummer made me feel like I was in the middle of a thunderstorm. The lead singer has an engaging voice.
Full catholic has been on my radar for a while but I was never able to catch them. I’m glad I did last night. They feel folk psychedelia. There’s a definite motion to the music that seeps into the core of the audience members. It’s all-encompassing in a good way.
