5 Questions with Amanda Grace on Give Me Away and release show Feb at the Icehouse

Give Me Away is a power release from Amanda Grace; she is really coming into her own as a singer and songwriter. She’s embracing the many roles, views and positions of different women in song. She will be hosting a release party for Give Me Away on February 8 at the Icehouse.

Tell me about Give Me Away. It’s a soft, straightforward song that feels both strong and vulnerable to me. Like you’re at a point where people are going to get the real you.
Yeah it is right where I am as a human, lover, parent and community member. I want to do so many things & everyday takes so much to get through. I think the idea is to sort of smile and get through challenges as they come because the world needs whatever small things we can do to make it better; we all have something in our soul to offer others.

If you were casting a movie of Mother’s Lullaby – do you feel you’d be the mother, child or both?
That’s a big question. Probably the mother but I would like to be the child so I could sleep more.

Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You is a long favorite of mine. You do such a nice rendition. How do you decide to put a song you didn’t write on the album? And what do you look for in that song?
I’ve been playing it live for about a year and don’t remember how I decided to carry out those notes etc., but Matt Patrick said he thought it was an interesting approach to the song so I went with it. Personally, that song chills me out when I sing it that way and I can’t feel stress if I want to get the vocal delivery needed for that rendition.

I’m a rock girl so I really like Hey Pretty One and Wouldn’t Be You. But thematically they are so different as if they were written by two different women. How do they feel to you?
Well, we all take turns at being both women, right? For WBY: I want to highlight in the fall that as a song to bring awareness to domestic abuse awareness month in October. I feel that song sort of landed on my lap when writing it & I don’t relate to it personally in my current relationships, but I think it’s a huge issue and we all can get stuck in cycles of abuse, and psychological abuse can almost be worse than physical abuse for people to break from. For HPO: I think that song is written about someone who has a crush but then realizes that that’s all it is; and sort of letting that person go at the end. It’s definitely a fun song to sing, but again I don’t personally relate to it within the commitments of my long term relationship.

Please tell us about the upcoming album release show.
It’s Thursday Feb 8th at the Icehouse; Fathom Lane is supporting for a short set and we hope to share the new songs at about 9/9:15. There are 11 new songs total
