Earlier, we checked out the new Trolls of DL designed by International artist Thomas Dambo. Then we went uber local to see the Nyberg Sculpture Garden in Vining, MN maybe 40 minutes from Detroit Lakes.
The artist, Ken Nyberg, was born and raised in the area. His art is made from scrap metal, old lawn mower blade and other recycled materials. One of his first big steps (pun intended) was The Big Foot, which is installed off a highway in town. Apparently, we kept this a big secret to everyone, included his wife for two years. Now, it’s sort of a Vining mascot. There’s also a work in honor of his astronaut daughter Karen Nyberg!
I like the art, which is a combination of nature pieces and odd surrealistic pieces such as the dancing knife and spoon and the giant pliers crushing a cockroach. There’s a charm to the pieces that almost obscures the art in the work, until you get up close and see the detail created in such hard materials.
