Are you looking for an excuse to check out the Wabasha Street Caves? I have one for you – After Life, The Experience at Wabasha Street Caves on October 11, 12 and 25 by Sparkle Theatricals.
I was able to participate in a sneak peek last night; it was a rehearsal with invited community feedback. So I’m reviewing the cake based on the batter, not plated dessert. But there’s potential in the batter.
The event is part theater and part happening. We experienced the theater, which is immersive and audience participation is encouraged. (If you’re as Minnesotan as I am, a drink beforehand might not go amiss.) There’s interaction and moments of story telling. It’s not scary but it’s eerie to be in a place with so many stories hidden in the walls.
The night started through the “backdoor” of the caves as if passing to another world. The space is naturally cavernous, damp and feels haunted. The lighting is moodily limited and there’s a building sense of community. We began a journey toward the next stage aka happening or After Party.
I only saw hints of the happening or After Party but it looks like it will be a conference or festival of the otherworldly. Dancers were rehearsing. Artists were honing their art. Tables were set up for discussions, presentations, and service related to the after life. For example, there might be a tarot reader, discussion on demons or Ouija board. (I am guessing, I don’t know exactly.) However, I do know there will be by catering and beverages by Chow Girls, Kowalski’s and Skinner’s Pub and Eatery. It could be an interesting party for the after-life curious. Or an excuse to see the caves or dress up – although no stilettos – the cave is a cave after all.
