A bonus post today based on my annual visit to the Milwaukee Art Museum with my parents to check out Tony Oursler’s MMPI (Self Portrait in Yellow). Mom and I love it; dad’s warming up to it too. It’s a little head stuck in a yellow overhead light, trapped under a folding chair, reciting questions/responses from the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory). Lines like:
“Sometimes I just don’t get the jokes.”
“I get angry quickly, and let it go just as fast.”
“I have few regrets.”
We stopped by a few of our favorites.
Today we got distracted by Robert Longo’s The Acceleration of History. He does charcoal drawings that are as realistic as photographs of well-known works of war art (such as The Third of May by Franscisco Goya) and more recent scenes of civic unrest or atrocities, such as the insurrection of January 6. They are eerie and thought provoking. His work included a video (Sea of Change)of a coastline with waves crashing to the shore. The sound is mesmerizing and familiar until you realize, the soundtrack is made up of earthquakes, bombs crashing, and buildings collapsing.
We had an amazing Thanksgiving visit in Chicago with my sister and an interesting drive in a driverless car with my brother. We never need to eat again … but we probably will.
