Andra Suchy has a new album coming out, Battle Cat. It’s a power album of a woman rising from the ashes to grace and some emotion. You can hear her (and her esteemed colleagues) play music from the album, and more at Crooner’s Super Club tonight – October 1!
Please tell us about yourself and your music.
I have been a musician my whole life and performed since I was a kid so it’s always been part of me. I feel like my bio tells a good story about who I am and how music all started for me.
Andra Suchy, a North Dakota native, hails from a talented and musical family. Renowned for having one of the finest voices in the industry, Andra is classically trained and a veteran of musical theater. Her illustrious career includes performances with esteemed artists such as Brad Paisley, Mindy Smith, Emmylou Harris, Chris Thile, John Prine, and soprano Renee Fleming. She has also collaborated on recordings with a diverse array of indie, rock, blues, and folk acts, including The Honeydogs, Jonny Lang, Peter Ostroushko, and Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner.
Andra has graced some of the most prestigious stages globally, including The Ryman Auditorium, First Avenue, and The Bohemian Hall. She is or was also a regular performer on the nationally acclaimed radio show, A Prairie Home Companion.
While primarily known for her vocal prowess, Andra has quietly been honing her songwriting craft. In 2006, she self-released her solo album, Patchwork Story. Later, she signed with the Grammy-winning label Red House Records and released her album Little Heart on March 27, 2012. This album, filled with infectious originals, is a twang-tinged mix of country, rock, folk, and blues, and has become a favorite on Americana and AAA radio stations. Generating significant buzz and media interest, her second solo release, Little Heart, established Andra as a prominent voice in country, Americana, and roots music. Throughout 2012, Andra toured in support of the album, showcasing at various festivals, including South By Southwest (SXSW) and the International Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis.
Your new album, Battle Cat, is a great showcase for your voice and varied musical tastes. What was the impetus for creating and releasing the album now?
Well it didn’t start as a single project. I was just writing and recording on my own. I had a small recording setup my brother gave me and I was recently divorced and I was just up at night so I taught myself how to use the very basics and I just recorded ideas as they came. It took me a long time to create this album and now that it’s done it’s time to share it.
Battle Cat is music that reflects the journey of a woman who has experienced profound loss, rebuilt from the ground up, and emerged triumphant like a phoenix rising from the ashes—a symbol proudly tattooed on my arm. Battle Cat is an offering of a profound exploration of human emotions that few artists are willing to share so openly. Rooted in Folk music with touches of Country and Americana. I want my music to embody the strength and beauty of a delicate flower.
Boyfriend feels like a vulnerable feminist song. Sometimes, we all want a friend but not always a boyfriend. I love how you embrace that ideal. What is the inspiration for the song?
Thank you! You pretty much have it. I don’t think people should always hope for or assume that as an outcome there is the element of impending romance. Or pushing for it. When people say “friends” sometimes that’s just what it is. This song is about denial and false hopes in the face of clearly delineated relationship parameters, resulting in disappointment and hurt.
Please tell us about your star-studded band. You have played with so many extraordinary musicians; it must have been difficult to select your partners for this work.
Well, I feel so fortunate. I know people say that all the time but I really do. It came down to just really organically finding the right people. Who WANTED to do it. And people who had already invested a lot of themselves in it. Jeremy produced the record and was the one who heard a record in my mess of demos. Steve was never a sure band member as we had both had experience with how being in a band with your significant other can really go badly. It just worked out that way in the end after Steve was already working with a couple of the band members. So it circles around not just because of him and me, but with everyone else. Speaking of which.

Please tell us about the events to celebrate the new album.
We have a full band live show at Crooners on Wednesday Oct. 1st. I’m pretty excited and the lovely Molly Dean will be kicking off the evening. This is not my album release show but I will be performing songs from my new album “Battle Cat” and we will be spinning my new album in full for all to hear before we perform. It’s a warm up show to the big album release show sometime later this fall! I promise to keep you posted on my album release show and any live performance record shop in-stores! We are taking everything as it comes. 🙂
