Drumming across downtown Minneapolis to raise ICE awareness and money for MIRACMN

Today 60ish drummers brought attention and joy to the streets of downtown Minneapolis for a couple hours.

We are tired, cold and crabby in the Twin Cities due to some unwelcome icy guests, but we haven’t lost our capacity for joy. We all bring our talents to the cause. Some of us make dinners, or go shopping, or patrol school, churches and markets. Some of us go to protests, learn to be legal observers, write checks do rapid response. And some of us drum loudly to shine on a light on what’s happening in our Cities and throughout the state and raise funds for MIRACMN. Important note: MIRAC fights for legalization for all, an end to immigration raids and deportations, an end to all anti-immigrant laws, and full equality in all areas of life. (You’ll see other organizations mentioned in the video and pictures too.)

This is the second drummer action in the Cities. The first included 30 drummers across the Stone Arch Bridge on January 23, the day of the general strike and march downtown. Langen and I were both at the march and I can tell you it was bitterly cold. Something like -20 degrees amidst mostly sheltered from wind by buildings. I can only image the feel on a bridge crossing the Mississippi River! It was 20 degrees today, which feels balmy after the past two weeks of subzero temps, but it’s well below freezing.

Leave it to the drummers to make us look cool generous and like we can all keep a beat. Thank you for your warm hearts and powerful fists!

Thanks to Langen (Girl at the Rock Shows) for the great pictures below. I was able to capture some video while livestreaming for Women’s March MN.
