Finick has a new EP coming up entitled, Make It real. We’ve had the opportunity in 2024 to have FINICK in studio and 2025, we did a 5-Question interview just before Purgatory came out. So it was great to catch up on the new EP too, which you can see live at the 7th Street Entry on Aug 22, 2026.
It seems like we catch up annually, in 2024 FINICK was in studio, in 2025 we did a 5-Question interview. Please catch us up. How has the last year been for you? (Please feel free to mention making the Star Tribune Top 10 album list!)
The past year has been really exciting for FINICK thanks to my last album Weekends In Purgatory being on the Star Tribune’s Top 10 album list, as well as being featured in Tumbling Rock magazine. FINICK played at 7th St Entry for the very first time, and we’re playing there again this saturday. We’ve also recorded and released three new songs called the Make It Real EP, along with a short vlog documenting the process which is available to watch on the FINICK YouTube channel.
Your new EP, Make it Real, shows three faces or voices or FINICK. It’s great showcase. Did you set out to show three sides? Or did it happen that three sides showed up in the songwriting?
The three different genres of the Make It Real EP were all formed organically during the songwriting process. I get inspiration from tons of different genres, which can be seen in my last LP Weekends In Purgatory. I listen to everything from folk to pop to punk-rock, and I like to keep everything I love about my favorite music alive in my own songs.
Glass in the Driveway is a powerful song, and anthem for you generation but also your age. I would have loved it when I was 19 and folks who are 9 now are going to love it in 10 years, if they don’t already. What has been the response from the audience to the song?
Glass in the Driveway has a very similar tone as my other song Selfish, as it’s more melodramatic and indulgent in rebellious emotions, which I’ve found has really connected myself with my audience. However, the show at 7th St Entry this Saturday will be the first time I’m playing Glass in the Driveway in front of a live audience!
Joy is Revolutionary is a chant I’ve heard at many marches and protests, especially in the last year. What was your inspiration for the song?
The lyric “even when the world is scary, joy is revolutionary” is from a chant used at a local summer camp I went to for many years, and now coach at, called She Rock She Rock. This camp was a truly formative experience for me growing up; it shaped my ideologies, taught me to be in a band, and was what originally inspired me to learn guitar. Both the phrase “joy is revolutionary” and the sentiment are really important to me and have been from a very young age, so it was fulfilling to see it come to life in the form of a song.
Please tell us about the upcoming release show.
This Saturday the full band will be playing at 7th St Entry with Lone Rock Bride, Woodzen and Sylvia Dieken! We’ll be playing tons of released FINICK songs, including the three new songs from the Make It Real EP. The show is going to be a blast, and there will be new FINICK merch as well!
