Once a year my worlds collide when my crew from Women’s March MN Action Fund have fun (and support Abortion Access Front) by going to see so many former guests from Mostly MN Music radio show. Do Re #MeToo, at the Parkway is a night to support and celebrate the amazingly talented musicians and activists (often in the same body), led by one of the funniest feminists to hail from this area – Lizz Winstead.
The reason for the event is to raise money for Abortion Access Front. They protect and support abortion and those who need access. The focus of the night is strong women singing reprehensible songs that we all loved back in the day. Singing along in community exorcises the power of the words.
Below is a glimpse at the lineup:
The Maneaters are the formidable backup band who hold up the sky so the singers can shine. The band includes: bandleader Jenny Case on guitar, Barb Brynstad on bass, Alyse Manuel on drums, Maureen McFarlane on keys, and Joan Hutton on sax.
Lizz Winstead never hits a sour note with her abominable taste in sexist songs. The show has been going on for years and I rarely (maybe never?) have heard a song done twice. For better or worse, I think we have decades of material.
Jaedyn James has a voice that that holds a lot of power. What a strong start. Also, Jaedyn walks the walks. She’s always been an advocate lgbtqia2s+ issues for but this year she’s been branching in all different frontlines.
Sophie Hiroko was a first-timer. I was excited to see her on the lineup and absolutely not disappointed. If I could see her Thursday (Sep 17) at the Weisman and noon – I definitely would. Also – great song choice.
Molly Maher with some J. Giles was next. Molly nailed it like a centerfold in school locker. I thought that song seemed weird back in high school. It didn’t age well. Always great to see and hear Molly.
Tricky Miki is a stalwart in the community. It’s amazing to see what Rolling Stone song she’ll dig up from the sewer each year and how she’ll do it better than the original.
I can’t believe Mary Bue hasn’t played this show before. But she was a first timer. Because her music is the antithesis, it’s especially fun to hear her reclaim the vibe.
Mary Cutrufello is a consummate professional. I’ve seen her several times this week and she wouldn’t tell me her song. It was worth the wait and it’s fun to see the energy she brings to a large stage.
It doesn’t matter what’s going on with Katy Vernon, she brings the joy – even when she’s honest about the rough spots. Also a forever do-gooder. With possibly the creepiest song choice of the night!
Janey Winterbauer has a such a beautiful voice and a fantastic wit. I love events like this where she can shine brightly. Although she’s pretty awesome in a band too.
Props to Aby Wolf for bring out a classic song with, as she said, lots of employment recommendations for girls. She voice and vibe is ever-versatile!
Christy Costello does a lot for the music community. A lot. Recently featured my favorite Handmaids of MN is one of her shows. And bringing in the punk, which is another fave with me. Sounded terrific.
Leslie Vincent is a fabulous jazz musician but boy she can rock any genre when the setting is right. Like if there’s a mic. What a great choice of a demeaning, crowd-pleasing song.
The encore was just the antidote, we needed – a little Dolly Patron.
