Different Kind of Something by The Makeouts featuring Marja Hansen is sultry and slow. The sound is sweet, the lyrics and real and the video is a conflict.
The music is perfect for a hot summer day. It’s that slow moving swampy twang. It sounds like a love song – with lyrics about living in your heart. But the video is old school cartoon treacherous. I’m not sure if it’s Disney; it actually seems to feature Mighty Mouse, who is a Terrytoons studio character but you know the type. The video featured wolves coaxing a baby lamb into the pot of bowling water and Mighty Mouse intervening. The juxtaposition of the sweet music with the cutting lyrics (“show me your teeth dear”) mashed up with the creepy video many of us watching as kids is entertaining and unsettling.
