Winning The Walker After Hours with Keith Haring

I love The Walker After Hours. It’s a chance to get a sneak peek at an upcoming art exhibit with fancy drinks and fun activities. It’s always a super busy night. Lots of great people watching and some time to check out the art. Last night they unveiled the work of Keith Haring. His work is graphical and colorful. Lots of naked people, and really. I mean men but in playful, humorous ways. He takes on tough subjects like AIDS and anti-Apartheid movements but uses levity, dance and colors to lift the subjects. It feels like a celebration because as the title of the event indicates – Art Is for Everybody.

I went to with my friend Lauren (thanks for some of the pictures!) and we just played the night perfectly. We arrived at 8:30, when the event opened. We bee-lined it to the gallery. We loved the art but also knew that we’d came back soon to soak it all in. Last night was about the experience of the evening. It was fun to watch other people enjoy the art and to just let it wash over us. And who doesn’t want a selfie with a giant penis?

After the gallery we shot up to the top floor gallery to make buttons, draw on the community mural (Who said you can’t put lipstick on a pig?) and have a fancy specialty cocktail. We beat the crowds at each step.

We ended out night in the main lobby dancing.
