MN Music Premiere: Fashion As Protest and Calamity Jane by PARISHES

So excited to share two new songs by PARISHES – Fashion As Protest and Calamity Jane. PARISHES is the bluesy brainchild of Taylor Carik (also in Mpls Whiskey Rock ‘n’ Roll Club); we spoke to him in studio as soon at the station reopened after the pandemic. PARISHES started as a mostly solo project and it still is with Taylor playing or programming all the instruments, but he has picked up some awfully special guests along the way.

Fashion As Protest

Sally Linda (Big Salt) lends her patiently sultry voice to the Fashion As Protest. There’s a cool vibe to the song that feels decidedly not Minnesotan. It’s not (Minnesota) nice, it’s more adventurous and it’s got a beat that lingers. Maybe this is a new strain of Minnesota blues. If so, I’m in for more.

Calamity Jane

The amazingly versatile Dean Brewington sings on Calamity Jane and Ben Miller (The Federales) is on harmonica. It’s hard to believe the vocals are coming from one person, even with the layering. The harmonica gives it the waiting for high noon feel. You can feel a story in the song through the cadence, the rhythm and movement.

There’s something about a PARISHES songs that seems to transport me to a basement bar I’ve never seen in New Orleans. Makes me feel sophisticated for a minute.
